FSU 1, Georgia 12 in poll of insignificance

Florida State is No. 1 , Georgia is No. 12 and eight SEC teams are in the top 25 of the Associated Press’s preseason poll. Well, that certainly means . . . nothing.

Preseason college football polls are great for stimulating debate. But they invariably mean little by the end of the season, and their significance has been diminished even more by the four-team playoff beginning this season. Polls are great for feeding perceptions about how good or bad a team may be but those perceptions last only until a highly ranked team loses or a non-ranked team keeps winning.

This was last year’s AP top 10: Alabama, Ohio State, Oregon, Stanford, Georgia, South Carolina, Texas A&M, Clemson, Louisville, Florida.

This is how it looked at the end: Florida State, Auburn, Michigan State, South Carolina, Missouri, Oklahoma, Alabama, Clemson, Oregon, Central Florida.

The Seminoles began the year with a preseason No. 11 ranking.

Auburn, which won the SEC championship and reached the BCS title game, was unranked in the preseason. The Tigers didn’t crack the top 25 until Week 8 (at No. 24).

Florida, the preseason No. 10, lost seven straight games to end the season finished 4-8 (3-5 in the SEC).

So with that in mind, here are a few things that stand out about this year’s preseason top 25:

• Georgia is No. 12 overall and fourth among SEC schools, behind No. 2 Alabama (which received one No. 1 vote), No. 6 Auburn and No. 9 South Carolina. The Bulldogs’ first two opponents are No. 16 Clemson and the Gamecocks.

• Florida State received 57 of the 60 first-place votes, not surprising since they’re coming off a national championship and they return the Heisman Trophy winner at quarterback, Jameis Winston (for at least as long as he can stay out of the court room).

•  The top 10 in the AP writers’ poll differed from the USA Today coaches’ poll only slightly, at Nos. 3 to 6. Otherwise the top 17 are identical. The AP top 10: (1) Florida State, (2) Alabama, (3) Oregon, (4) Oklahoma, (5) Ohio State, (6) Auburn, (7) UCLA, (8) Michigan State, (9) South Carolina, (10) Baylor. The USA Today top 10: (1) Florida State, (2) Alabama, (3) Oklahoma, (4) Oregon, (5) Auburn, (6) Ohio State, (7) UCLA, (8) Michigan State, (9) South Carolina, (10) Baylor.

• Georgia Tech, which received two votes in the USA Today poll, did not receive any votes in the AP poll. Yet, Navy (two), Nevada (one), Louisiana-Lafayette (one) and Utah State (one) received votes. Can’t wait to see how that looks at the end of the season.

Thoughts?

Here’s the entire top 25:

No where to go but down for the SUCKEYES! Who is the backup again?

I do feel bad for tampa starting the season in the "others receiving votes" category. dogs will join him there soon enough,

I'm no Michigan State hater, but what businiess do they have being 8th? They only return 5 starters on defense, which is what carried them last year.  They return 8 starters on offense, but they lost Bell.  Top 25 sure, but 8th?

I've said this a 100 times before and I will say it again.  Vegas should put out the top 25 poll because they have to know what they are talking about, their income depends on it.  Ohio State top 5 again, so effing rediculous.  Teams will pass right on by them like they did last year even though they win, once again proving the voters are idiots.

This is why the dogs will be unranked faster than you can say hobnail boot:

2) Georgia secondary: The Dawgs have been underachieving and underwhelming on D for a few years. Enter new DC Jeremy Pruitt, who comes from FSU and has pushed for a more active group but also has simplified the calls from old DC Todd Grantham and harped on the details. The backfield has had to be rebuilt from a team that gave up way too many big plays. There’s basically CB Damian Swann and a lot of other question marks. (UGA was 115thin plays allowed of 60 yards or longer.)

By the way, did anyone else see Frankie Hammond, one of those Florida WRs with no skills and no playmaking ability from last year, making plays and showing great WR and return skills for the Chiefs last night.....and Murray throwing a long TD on his first pass of the game.  Florida has skilled receivers last year but no QB (due to injuries) to throw them the ball....and no OL (due to injuries) to block for the QB.  Hammond looked sensational on the field last night.  Turned heads big time.

Only two teams ranked in the top 10 preseason  last year were in the top 10 at the end.

This all means little in the end.

Gonna be interesting to watch this selection committee unfold and see how their selection coincides with the polls. I tell you, I predict more controversy than the BCS.

unlike years past it doesn't matter one bit where you are ranked pre-season.  win and everything will take care of itself.

It is a battle of the top five conferences and the teams within those conferences.  Just win your conference title game.....oh....sorry.....Oklahoma.

@ColumbusDawg JT Barrett. Redshirt Freshman. 5 Star #1 Dual Threat. More O weapons than one can count.

Let's wait for the MRI results, shall we?

P.S. Like the "SUCKEYES" reference. Very 350ish.

Now, go back to idolizing your #12th ranked, 4th in the SEC! SEC! coming off an 8-5 unranked campaign and losing the Nebraska in a 2nd rate Bowl dogs.

Michigan State returns one of the best QBs in the country, and they had a lot of depth last year on both sides of the ball, as well as a good recruiting class coming in.  They deserve to be ranked that high in my opinion.  So does Ohio State.  They will be good on both sides of the ball, and could be really good on both.  Wisconsin and Nebraska are going to be good from the B10 as well.  Those four teams would be able to play with most of the top teams in the country and would contend in both divisions in the SEC......And it all starts with Wisconsin vs. LSU opening weekend.  That is a big one for the Tigers.

gbal

@TampGator1  Agree 100% .... With this committee and in he interest of being FAIR, regardless of what they have announced regarding selection of 4 teams, it would take the oddest of situations for more that one team from a conference getting in the 4 team playoff..... Like the winner of one conference having 3-4 losses and three one loss teams in another conference, with one of the 3 getting left out of the conference championship buy the 3rd or 4th tiebreaker rule!! It wont happen!!

Now go to 8 teams!!!!.......

dawginbama
dawginbama

@TampGator1 winning your conference title helps but isn't the determining factor.  if acc, big 12, big 10, pac 12 champion have 2 losses, they will put in a 2nd SEC team with 1 loss.

DawgGoneIt

@OH-IO I can guarantee you Ohio State doesn't have as many weapons on O as UGA does. Georgia has countless weapons to give the ball to. So many that we can't get them all on the field.

And being 4th in the SEC actually isn't bad at all when you consider that we have 14 teams in the conference. That is upper echelon. We really should be 3rd because South Carolina IMO is not better than UGA. And I don't think Auburn is either but they had a great year last year so they'll get the #2 spot for now.

Nice research on the backup plan for Ohio State. As if you care.

TampGator1

@gtcaryd

Murray looked poised and accurate.  No big arm, but you do not need one to be successful in the NFL as a QB......as accuracy and brains are more important, and Murray has plenty of brain power and is deadly accurate on his throws.  I love the way he sees the field the most, and is so relaxed in the pocket.  He won't start for KC this year, but he will some day, for them or another team in my opinion.  I guess, if it is another team, his girlfriend will have to transfer broadcasting jobs again.

This post is why you are such a bore and so obnoxious to most people. You obviously did no watch, so why are you even responding to my post about Hammond?  Go watch some replays of the 2006 national title game for some real football inspiration....and come back with something intelligent to post on here....if you have that skill.

ARdawg

@gbal @TampGator1

A rare situation that the SEC had a few years ago when LSU/Bama were 1&2 even after they played could conceivably put two SEC teams in the playoffs. LSU won the conference and nobody really disputed they were the best two in the country. The idea of the committee is to come to a consensus on the 4 best teams

GTBob
GTBob

@dawginbama Actually, the committee pretty explicitly said that conference champions will be used to distinguish two similar teams. It is really unlikely that a 2 loss conference champion will ever get left out over a 2 loss non champion from any other conference.

TampGator1
TampGator1

@dawginbama

No way that happens. The people, not a computer, will not let two Sec teams in.....not the first year anyway.  No way, in my opinion.  It would hurt the PR of the playoff system too much the first year.  Politics WILL be involved now.

I prefer what the lower divisions do.....make the playoffs regional, with two teams coming from the western/southwestern, two from midwestern/eastern, and two from the deep south/southeastern regions, and two wild card teams....for a total of eight playoff teams.....and reduce  the regular season to 11 games.  And have maybe 8 meaningless bowl games right after the season ends (for a couple of weeks) that will lead up to the eight game playoff series.  But we all know that will never happen.

 Bama for the 3rd year in a row has one of the conference's weakest schedules. They should make it this year even. Even with weak schedule, they're still good.

PigIron
PigIron

@OH-IO @TampGator1

I don't know about that. I agree that it would be a political nightmare for the committee to seed 2 SEC teams in the first year of the playoffs, but the possibility exists for 2 teams from the same conference to get in.

Suppose Auburn had lost to Missouri after barely beating out Alabama to play in the SECCG last year. Now also suppose that every other major conference champion had at least 2 losses. That is not an impossible scenario.

That said, I suspect that we'll probably have an 8 team playoff before this statistical anomaly actually occurs.
