Bad sign? Florida struggles in win (updated)

By Jeff Schultz

(Updated: 4:30 p.m.)

Here’s your first NCAA bracket tip: Assume nothing with Florida.

The No. 1 ranked Gators took a 24-game winning streak into their SEC semifinal game against Tennessee Saturday and for most of the game looked rather pedestrian. They pulled it out in the end, winning 56-49 at the Georgia Dome, but not before leaving some doubt about how far they’ll go in the NCAA tournament – and for that matter how they’ll fare in Sunday’s SEC title game against the winner of Georgia-Kentucky.

Somebody asked Florida coach Billy Donovan if he would’ve considered a loss such a bad thing before the NCAA tournament.

His response: “That really never crossed my mind. When you’re in there competing, you’re trying to win. I do think that the these different experiences are good. I thought our struggle was we did not get great productivity off of our bench and we had to sub. When we sub, that’s when I thought Tennessee went on a run. I’m happy for our guys. But I thought the game really could have gone either way.”

Florida (31-2) trailed by much as 10 points in the first half and by seven at halftime. But strong second-half defense and a bit of an unraveling by Tennessee made the difference. It was tied at 45-45 with 4:57 left when Jeronne Maymon fouled out of the game and compounded the issue by arguing with the official, drawing a technical foul. The Gators hit four straight free throws and never trailed again. Tennessee also turned the ball over two straight times down the court.

Volunteers coach Cuonzo Martin disputed the technical call on Maymon, saying he looked at the replay and, “There wasn’t anything derogatory that was said.”

Despite the loss, Tennessee, thought to be on (or close to) the bubble of making the NCAA field, made a strong case for inclusion with this game. The Volunteers defended well and might would have won had they shot better in the second half (5-for-20) and not committed 16 turnovers.

Florida, meanwhile, will take a 25-game winning streak into Sunday’s SEC final. The Gators’ last loss: Dec. 2 at Connecticut (65-64). Their early NCAA tournament run may not be as easy as some expected.

350.....

The Florida Gators basketball team made up of........"punks".......well that tops off a really bad "book it" day for you.  But what is unusual about that.  Nothing but class showing from Billy Ds team.

Dawg350.......

Question for you.  When has Georgia beaten Kentucky three times on one year, gone undefeated in the SEC during the regular season to win the regular season SEC title, and then go undefeated in the same year to win the SEC tournament?   "Book it".....NEVER.  Florida just did all of the above.  "Book" that, too.  And "book" one other thing.....your don't know jack about "booking" anything other than "booking" that you will have middle school homework on Monday night.

FLORIDA GATORS.....REGULAR SEASON UNDEFEATED BASKETBALL CHAMPS IN THE SEC.

FLORIDA GATORS.....SEC TOURNEY CHAMPS.

FLORIDA DID NOT LOSE ONE SINGLE GAME AGAINST A SEC TEAM THIS YEAR IN 21 TRIES BY THOSE OTHER TEAMS, INCLUDING GEORGIA'S 50 to 72 LOSS TO THE GATORS.

FLORIDA GATORS.....THE NUMBER ONE SEED IN THE ENTIRE NCAA TOURNEY.

And 350......add that last comment as another thing the Georgia Bulldogs have never been.

This article was already stupid after Florida's win against Tennessee, but now it's even dumber.

TampGator1: ". . . The tourney is pure drama at its best and one of the reasons why the NCAA tourney is watched by so many sports fans all over the world each year."

Which makes it all the more ridiculous that D-1 football hasn't implemented a similar postseason tournament--like every other NCAA sport--to determine a true on-field champion. The interest generated by March Madness would pale in comparison to that of a legitimate D-1 football championship.

350 has obviously not watched Georgia State play, and has not watched their two terrific guards play in particular.  GSU has a very strong starting 5.  Where they will get hurt in the NCAAs is what comes off the bench.  But they are a team I would not want to play in round one for sure.  Kind of remind me of Florida Gulf Coast from last year.

350....

You book everything and you are wrong on your bookings most of the time.  "Book it" means absolutely nothing coming from your keyboard.  "Book it" means it is absolutely going to happen.  You don't come back later and post....."I guess I was wrong".......after Georgia did not win the SEC....which you posted as a "book it."   But your chances are greater on a "book it" for the NIT, which would not be as much as an accomplishment as winning the SEC tourney or NCAA tourney.  You can book that.

I will take a wager from you on that "mark this down."  This Florida team is better than the one that went to the final 8 last year.   A lot better.

Florida's offense is good enough, and no one in the country has a better defense. But even Duke a few years back (rated #1 at the time) got upset in the first round of the NCAA tourney.  It happens sometimes.  The tourney is pure drama at its best and one of the reasons why the NCAA tourney is watched by so many sports fans all over the world each year.

fla's offense isn't that good. they will struggle in the ncaas past the first 2 rounds.  mark this down--fla gets upset in the sweet 16!

First, you "hope" Florida gets the "crap" beat out of them.  Then, you state that Kentucky is going to "beat them like a rented mule."   As usual, speaking out both sides of your juvenile mouth.   By the way, Florida already beat the "crap" out of Kentucky "like a rented mule" twice this season.  Obviously, that gives you hope that Florida will NOT do it a third time.  Personally, I think it is going to be a battle just like the Florida vs. Tennessee game.  Kentucky has the better talent to put out on the court today, but do they have the better team and coach?  We will find out at 3:15 pm today.

Very simple- Tennessee is much better than given credit and is playing their basketball this season. UT had their chance to beat Floria but as championship caliber teams do the Gators did what needed to be done and found a way to win and bottom-line this is all that matters-not style points!

As a Geogia fan we can only hope that our Basketball Program WILL EVER become as good as Tennessee and Florida.

Was there really a point to this article? Yes the Gators apologize for beating a quality Tennessee team who will be in the tournament for the 3rd time this year. Guess it really shows that Arizona is the best...oh wait they lost to UCLA, I guess then it shows that Kansas is, oh wait they lost in their tournament too. Maybe Virginia? Wait they can't count because Tennessee destroyed them. Jeff please tell us who has doubt as how far the Gators can go in the tourney after today? Because in watching ESPN, CBS college sports and Fox sports1 all list Florida as their national title favorite still. So I'm thinking it may just be the UGA writer.

Florida is a very good BB team. 10RC isn't a bad team and could play with many of the teams that will get into the Big Dance. UK played dayum good today against a UGA team that's not bad themselves. The SEC has to get out and schedule better teams and beat them if we expect to get 4 teams in the Dance each year and we deserve 4 this year.

Tennessee is the same team that crushed Virginia earlier in the year.  So, Virginia, must be a really bad team using your logic from above.

One hard-fought game (a win) against a red-hot Tennessee team and suddenly we should "assume nothing" with Florida. I'm not a Gators fan, but this article has to be an attempt at trolling.

TampGator1
TampGator1

Now, back to the subject of the article:

Obviously, Schultz, you have not followed the Gators basketball team much this year, with the nonsense you wrote above.  Or, the play of the Tennessee Vols recently either.  As the announcer stated towards the end of the game: "No team will want to play Tennessee in the NCAAs."   The reason the Gators.....ARE THAT GREAT this year is the play of their four seniors (exhibited in the second half of the game) and the incredible defense the entire team plays (also exhibited in the second half of the game).  As the Tennessee coach explained after the game: "They are a great defensive team...meaning the Gators."  And defense wins championships.  And the fact that Florida came from 7 points down at halftime, against a very good team, to win in the tourney, was very impressive and reflects greatness.  You usually write insightful and knowledgeable things......not so with this article, which seems motivated by bias and maybe envy.

By the way, Georgia is not very good either, since they are struggling to beat Kentucky at the half.  Makes about as much sense to me.

That would be....."racially divided."

That would be an, English 101 lesson, with the lesson being that an adverb modifies a verb, which an adjective cannot accomplish in a sentence.  You know, that ancient subject that used to be taught with some level of knowledge and expectation before the advent of a technological society (adjective modifying a noun just there) sent basic English language skills out of most human brains under the age of 40.

@TampGator1 From a Bulldawg fan in Florida, I agree Tamp.  It's amazing even down here on sports talk they don't give these kids their due, especially with comparing them to the back-to-back champs from a few years ago.  This Florida team is really good and amazingly humble.  Anything can happen in the tourney, but I don't think you can bet against them.

Just goes to show how far journalism has fallen. Punks and bloggers. Perhaps Jeff can list his greatest athletic achievement for us. I would think at best Jeff was one of those that the coach had to work around to get his two innings in for games.
